Smell is one of our strongest senses. It’s also a great way to describe a place to someone who’s never been there. We all know the familiar scents of the places that we frequent, so Graphic Designer Kate McLean decided to illustrate this concept by making smellmaps of various cities. Smellmaps not only provide more sensory details of a place, but can also tell a lot about a neighborhood like the culture, government funding (or lack thereof), environmental issues, and more.
This is cool because I think we can all know about the crazy amount of smells in NY are going to hit you

Zoya, I love this map! Living in NYC, I am way too familiar with this. It’s interesting how they connect gentrification to the changing of smells in different cities.

I feel like NYC is known for having weird smells so its cool that someone was able to pin point most of them.

This smell map is fantastic. It really nailed the frequency with which you smell urine in the city – far too often.
